Van Etten is proud to present Titus Boguslaw's exhibition DER NEUNTE SCHUSS GING SAUBER DURCH DIE STIRN // THE NINTH SHOT WENT CLEANLY THROUGH THE HEAD. The exhibition takes the spectator on a visual journey through repressed memories where three European languages are particularly present: Polish, German and Swedish. Its words and figures stem from inner life; a blend of fear, repressed childhood and endless violence.

The title is borrowed from a lyric in the song ”Hetzjagd auf Nazis”  by the German band Atari Teenage Riot; the exhibition revolves around notions of searching and destroying, ruling and sundering. What is sought is not material, but rather a mapping of identity and the constant shifts between inner wishes and external influences. As the title suggests, the exhibition aims its parables at the spectators' mind - if they are lucky, the shot will pierce through.

Boguslaw mainly works with painting, drawing and installation. He often explores states of  cognitive dissonance. It is an unpleasant condition - a state of mind where thoughts, knowledge or actions do not match. The conflict results in an uneasy activation. Boguslaw interprets an exhibition as a perplexing "gestalt" - an organized whole which explores more than just the sum of its parts. As such, it emboldens the artist to explore motifs in new ways.

Titus Boguslaw (b.1987) is based in Stockholm, Sweden. He was educated at the Academy of Fine Arts in Oslo (Khio), and at Hgb. Leipzig (Prof. Heribert Ottersbach) in Germany. Earlier exhibitions include StudyforArtplatform (2021) and Norra Tornen Art residency (2021) in Stockholm.
