«Jeg skaper steder der jeg møter det jeg frykter, et begrenset sted, som jeg kan gå inn i og ut av». I maleriene og tegningene, som jeg viser på van Etten, handler disse stedene om arv, identitet og bevegelsen mot mørket (eller til steder der men ikke vet hva man møter).
Ideene til utstillingen bunner i en pågående opprydding av stedene jeg vokste opp i. I hele mitt kunstnerskap har jeg jobbet med å frigjøre meg fra det jeg kommer fra, men nå handler det om det motsatte, nemlig å vende tilbake til plassene, mentaliteten og hendelsene som formet meg. Det handler om hvordan oppveksten alltid henter en inn, selv om man gjør alt man kan for å distansere seg både fysisk og mentalt.
Arbeidene mine er ofte brutale og realistiske, men de nye prosjektene har en større subtilitet hvor dramatikken ligger i kontrastene mellom lys og mørke, og i det uhåndgripelige. Like fullt har arbeidet, med disse små bildene til denne utstillingen, vært dramatisk.
Videoperformancen, som vises adskilt fra de andre arbeidene, ble gjort som et stunt og bygger på to eldre arbeider, og beskriver, i tillegg til en ubotelig redsel for mørke, en slags oppsummering av stemningen jeg sitter igjen med gjennom oppgjøret med fortiden. Arbeidet berører også noen sosiopolitiske spørsmål, som det er blitt sagt om mine andre arbeider; «Låker er mest kjent for sin kompromissløse behandling av tabuer som skam, skyldfølelse, ensomhet og død. Men samtidig har arbeidene et bredere spekter av sosiale emner som feminisme, rasisme, sexisme, sosialpolitiske forhold og psykologiske prosesser».
Utstillingen «Mørkelagt» er forbundet med filmprosjektet «Tilbake til skogen» som er i forberedelsesfasen. Her utspilles virkelige hendelser i unaturlige omgivelser og skaper gjennom dette en annen og ny virkelighet, slik som drømmer noen ganger kan skape en ytterligere forståelse av vår egentlige tilstand.
Jannicke Låker (1968 Drammen) bor og jobber i Berlin og Oslo. Studerte på Kunstakademiet i Trondheim 1993-1997 og Kungliga Konsthögskolan i Stockholm 97-98. Låkers arbeid har blant annet blitt utstilt på GIBCA Göteborg Internationale Kunstbiennale, Museum of Contemporary Art Krakow, Center for Digital Art in Holon, Whitney Museum i New York, Moderna Museet i Stockholm, Lilith Performace Studio i Malmö, Nasjonalmuseet i Oslo, Stenersenmuseet i Oslo, KODE i Bergen, Kunsthalle Mannheim, Kunstlerhaus Bethanien Berlin og blitt presentert på flere internasjonale filmfestivaler, bl.a. på Nordic Panorama Århus, International Competition South av SouthWest Austin Texas, International Women's Film Festival Rio de Janeiro, Hamburg International Film Festival og Trash-Programm 1 Kino Arsenal Berlin.

«I create places where I am faced with what I fear; a limited space into which I can enter and exit.» The places depicted in the paintings and drawings exhibited at Van Etten deal with heritage, identity and the movement towards the darkness (or towards places of unknown encounters).
The ideas for the exhibition emerged from an ongoing process of cleaning up and out of the places where I grew up. So far, my artistic production reflects an attempt to dissociate from my background. Now, however, this has been reversed and I am rather retracing the places, the mentality and the occurrences which have shaped me. It is about how your background always seems to catch up with you, no matter how considerable the effort to create a distance, both physically and mentally.
My works are often brutal and realistic, but the newer projects are more subtle and the drama lies in the contrasts between light and dark and in the impalpable. Nevertheless, the work with the small images for the exhibition has been dramatic.
The video performance was done as a stunt and is shown independently from the other pieces. It is based on two older works and describes, not only an irremediable fear of the dark, but also the residual mood that lingers in me after my confrontation with the past. As in my other films, the performance touches upon certain sociopolitical topics. The following is an example of one of the things that has been said about the works:
«Låker is mainly known for her uncompromising treatment of taboos such as shame, guilt, loneliness and death. At the same time her works also address a wider range of social issues such as feminism, racism, sexism, sociopolitical relations and psychological processes».
The exhibition «Mørkelagt» relates to the film project ‘Tilbake til skogen’ (Returning to the forest), which is still in preparation. In the film, real events are played out in unnatural surroundings, which in turn create a new and different reality. Just as dreams sometimes can further our understanding of our current state.
Jannicke Låker (1968 Norway) lives and works in Berlin and Oslo. She studied at Trondheim Academy of Fine Art 1993-1997 og The Royal Academy of Fine Art Stockholm 97-98. Låker’s work has, among others, been exhibited at The Museum of Contemporary Art Krakow, GIBCA Göteborg International Art Biennale Sweden, Center for Digital Art in Holon, Whitney Museum in New York, Modern Museum in Stockholm, Museum of Contemporary Art Oslo, Lilith Performace Studio in Malmö, OCA -grantee at Kunstlerhaus Bethanien Berlin. It has also been presented at several international film festivals, a.o. at Nordic Panorama Århus, International Competition South by SouthWest Austin Texas, International Women's Film Festival Rio de Janeiro, nominated for the ARTE Award at Hamburg International Film Festival and received the Terje Vigen - and the Film Critics Award at the Norwegian Short Film Festival.
